Work of the Governing Board


Together, the Governors are responsible for:

Setting aims and targets for the school and checking the school’s progress towards attaining these.

Monitoring how well the school’s policies and plans are working.

Accounting for the performance of the school and the Governing Board.

Working with the Headteacher to make sure that teaching at school is effective and that the children are making the best possible progress.

Taking general responsibility for the school and its budget.

Challenging and supporting the senior leadership team and taking opportunities to show interest in and appreciation of staff and pupils.

Promoting the interests of the school and its pupils in the wider community.


Types of Governors

There are several different types of Governor:

Parent Governor – Elected from parents at the school by parents at the school.

Staff Governor – Elected from staff at the school by staff at the school.

Local Authority (LA) Governors – Appointed by the LA.

Foundation Governors – Appointed by the Church of England

Co-opted Governors – Appointed by members of the Governing Board. They are intended to be representative of the local community and may add particular areas of expertise.


NB: None of our Governing Board have financial or business interests in the school or are part of any other school governing board.


New Longton All Saints’ Governing Board Committee Structure

At NLAS, the Governing Board is made up of three committees: Standards & Curriculum; Resources and Ethos. The Full Governing Board and the committees meet termly.


Standards and Curriculum Committee

The Standards and Curriculum Committee are responsible for all aspects of teaching, learning and pupil development, behaviour, safety and wellbeing. They are responsible for scrutinising internal and publicised progress and attainment data as well as conducting learning walks and monitoring visits. They provide challenge and support to the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and the SLT to ensure that high standards are maintained and the school is consistently improving in line with the School Improvement Plan. Governors on the teaching and learning committee are regularly in school, experiencing all aspects of school provision first-hand. Mrs Catherine Kampta is Chair of the Standards and Curriculum Committee and has an over-arching responsibility for SEN. In addition, committee members are each responsible for curriculum or development priority areas.


Resources Committee

The Resources committee is responsible for the school finances and premises, including staffing and Health and Safety. They provide challenge and support to the Headteacher and School Business Manager, scrutinising budgets, financial forecasts, spending and staffing arrangements. Mr Craig Markey is Chair of the Resources committee and is also the designated Prevent Governor.


Ethos Committee

The Ethos committee is responsible for ensuring the school’s daily actions meet with the expectations of the trust deed as set out at the inception of the school in 1867. It is tasked with ensuring that our Christian values remain constant in all that we do and takes responsibility for SIAMS. Mrs Bronwen Bracegirdle is the Chair of the Ethos Committee.
